Local Information

Monchique is a historic village dating back hundreds of years, settled high up in the mountains of the Serra de Monchique,  this nature reserve has been loved by many including the former Portuguese Monarchy. Towering above the village of Monchique is Fóia the highest point in the Algarve measuring approx 902 metres above sea level. From this highest point there is a panoramic view of the Algarvian coast line, overlooking the Atlantic and beyond towards the shores of Africa. Fóia is home to many Radio stations and a large gift shop selling local crafts. There is also a restaurant, an art gallery and also a unique 'Beer Truck' selling cold beverages and snacks from a  .

Throughout the area there are roadside fountains with natural mineral water in which the area is known for. Often you will see families from the city filling up dozens of water bottles to take back home. The nearby settlement of Caldas de Monchique is famed for its water source, even the name has its origings with water, "caldas de Monhique" loosely translates as "Springs of Monchique". Its in this little settlement where there is the famous 'Monchique' bottling plant and the local Hotel and Spa. With a couple of nice cafe's and bars including the high end restaurant 1874, the steelement has its own Post Office (CTT) and its origional communal Bread Oven which bakes the traditional Pão com Chouriço (Chouriço Bread) every morning from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon and sold at the nearby snack-bar for €2,80.

The villageof Monchique is the centre of the Monchique district and has everything you need on hand, with a large new Intermache supermarket less than 5 km away, the town has its own Pharmacy, Public Swimmig Pools, Council Offices, an abundance of cafes and restaurants and local shops and its own town hospital. The Parish Church of Monchique is open daily with Catholic services being held every Sunday at 10:30 am

Monhique also has is own Tourist Information Centre where you can find out more about the local area and local laws and customs which you may be unaware of. The Tourism Board in Portugal is headed by the Visit Portugal institution in which we are associated with by law. Naturally the village also has its own school and dedicated Voluntary Fire Department and Police Station (GNR).

Just under 2km towards Portimao on the left is Parque de Minas. This is a museum in the grounds of an old manor house with many exhibits of rural life in the past. The riverside town of Silves with its castle and cathedral is a must and it has a nice indoor market for fresh produce daily and a massive outdoor one each month. You can also take a riverboat cruise down to Portimao. A visit to Silves Barragem is nice. This is a huge man made lake which is a lovely spot for a picnic. In Portimao, you will  find the "Continente" hypermarket on  the main road to Praia da Rocha and a Lidl supermarket is just opposite it and there are several other big shopping centres not far away. There is also a gigantic indoor fruit, vegetable, meat and fish market nearby. On the waterfront there are sailing trips on a replica sailing ship while towards Praia da Rocha you will find the new marina.  Lagos is another interesting town and it too has a fabulous Marina with cafes and restaurants overlooking the boats and it is possible here to book fishing and sailing trips. The trips to the caves are good value at about 12 Euros and the sights are amazing. Alte is an inland village that is quite pretty by day and by night there are feasts and folklore evenings which can be quite entertaining.

Places to visit

Award Winning Beaches

There are plenty of them! We like the ones at Alvor, Praia da Rocha with its weird rock formations, Praia da Vau, Ferragudo, Carvoeiro and Lagos. Also Armacao da Pera at the old part where the fishing boats are kept on the beach.   A little further afield is the spectacular west coast, where during and after storms, the Atlantic breakers thunder ashore following an unhindered journey from The Americas.

Actually, excellent beaches are all along the Algarve coast.  One of our favourites is the small beach at Praia da Vau, about half a mile west of Praia da Rocha. It has some nice beach bars that do very good omelettes at lunchtime and a bar in the hotel complex that does a pint of beer for about 1 euro until 7pm.

Other easy beaches to reach from the villa are at Alvor which has a huge expanse of golden sand as well as a pretty fishing port with lots of facilities and more nice bars on the paved harbourside.  And, after a day on the beach, in 2015 you could buy a pint of beer for 90cents in one of the bars in Alvor!

Between Alvor and Lagos is an almost endless strip of sand, Meia Praia. To find it easily start at the Lagos end and there are plenty of beach bars placed at strategic intervals.

The west coast is best reached from Aljezur.   Go up towards Monchique and then turn left at  the big  granite  quarry  and  keep  going  west  for  about  40 minutes.  Near Aljezur you will  find  the  access roads to these beautiful wild and windswept beaches reminiscent of the West Coast of Ireland.

Between Sagres and  Cape  St. Vincent   (once thought to  be where you would fall off the edge of the world!)  there is  some  beautiful  scenery   and   historic sites associated with Prince Henry the Navigator. The view from the lighthous at Cape St. Vincent is awesome and  look  out for anglers perched precariously on  the  cliffs  hundreds  of  feet above the water (and yes, they do occasionally fall off!).

On the east side of Portimao harbour is Ferragudo, a small fishing port with a lot of seafood restaurants plus a nice quiet sheltered beach within the harbour and is worth a visit.  A popular pastime in summer is to sit in the village square with a cool drink and watch the world go (slowly) by.

Praia da Rocha is very commercialised. It is the place to go for night life, gift shops, English and Irish bars, all along the main shopping street where there are pavement vendors everywhere and Portuguese families enjoy themselves with their young children well into the early hours of the morning. The beach has bars and cafes hiring out sun loungers and umbrellas and it is backed by fantastic rock formations in the cliffs.

Shoppers Paradise

The huge AQUA shopping mall with its three floors of free underground parking is only a 15 minute drive from the villa and is hard to beat for modern shopping with many names you will know from home. There is a large food court on the roof terrace with free entertainment most nights and it stays open until midnight in summer months. There are lots of other shopping centres and malls within easy driving distance as well as good supermarkets and for those who miss the old C & A stores that used to be in the UK, there is one open very near Aqua. In all the bigger towns you will find Chinese shops which sell a huge range of products at very low prices, but Portugal still has a good number of traditional shops and these are worth supporting or they will not survive much longer.
